Our sustainability philosophy
naturally sustainable
As Daughter of the Alps, Marlene has always lived in harmony with both mankind and nature. However, this relationship of harmony is in danger, since climate change threatens the equilibrium on which nature depends. The blurring of the distinctions between the seasons, extreme weather and water shortages are just some of the drastic effects.
So we want to set a good example
and make a real difference.
As a
partner of nature
, Marlene
®
is very concerned to protect her and our habitat, and to promote her philosophy of sustainable living worldwide.
To do this, we base our actions on
three pillars of sustainability
, which we analyse in detail below.
We also wish to celebrate their importance, so in partnership with five artists we present five exciting artistic interpretations of each pillar. Harmonious, abstract, nature-loving or sensory:
sustainability inspires people and nature to fulfil their potential!
The South Tyrolean Apple as a global success model
We promote healthy eating
In partnership with nature
The best example?
Chef Norbert Niederkofler, who moves mountains every day. How? By proving, through his “Cook the Mountain” project, the contribution an innovative mountain cuisine can make to a sustainable environment.

SOUTH TYROL APPLES, A GLOBAL SUCCESS STORY
What makes the agriculture of South Tyrol a model of sustainability? We explain it here with some fascinating facts.
Energy
"In the difficult historical context of climate change and its disastrous consequences, Marlene is a standard bearer for environmental protection. Apples are therefore becoming new light, strength and energy, even more powerful than that of a torch. In an imaginary forest of windmills and wind blades, Marlene lights the way and indicates the right direction to the new generation. The hope is that innovative and intelligent cultivation practices will become the universal model for a future that respects nature and the planet that hosts us."

Small, but fundamental
"The first scene illustrates the importance of organic farming as the basis for sustainability. The main character, a little girl, is shown tending to an orchard, cultivating and creating the ideal habitat for visiting insects, which, as well as contributing to pollination and reproduction, will also combat potential pathogens and pests, keeping the plants healthy. Precisely because she is very small, she understands the importance of small insects."

Environment
"In this illustration, I wanted to convey the complexity and beauty of the environment at all costs, to capture various moments and situations, and to portray the apples as the fruit of many circumstances and of a perfect ecosystem that respects the fundamental elements, the environment, and the magnificent reality of this small piece of land. Sun, rain, wind, birds, villages, houses, mountains, fields, meadows and apple trees... everything flows in perfect harmony and the combination of all these elements gives Marlene apples their personality."

Root
"In this illustration I focused on the circular economy, the leaves form it, the creation of Marlene, their roots, the hands of farmers who have been caring for, innovating and protecting the nature that welcomes the fruits for generations."

Regional, international, inspired:
The farming sector of our South Tyrol region is a
global model of success in structural sustainability
. The family farms, the regional associations and cooperatives and the national consortia ensure that the agricultural sector is deeply integrated in the region’s culture, its economy, its tourism and its landscapes.
Attention is increasingly focused on South Tyrol fruit growing:
It is the driving force behind the introduction, deepening and broadening of a
circular economy that reaches beyond the borders of the region itself
. By 2030, in the fruit growing sector we will achieve a balanced input of nutrients into soils, with a rising proportion of organic fertiliser use.
Innovations for the coming generations:
Renewable energy and resources, green electricity and photovoltaic and wind power will be widely used in South Tyrol fruit growing. Because targeted, sustainable innovations go hand in hand with protection of the climate and the environment.
WE PROVIDE PEOPLE WITH HEALTHY NOURISHMENT
Why are apples so valuable and who is behind South Tyrol fruit growing? These are the issues we are going to discuss here!
Genesis
"There can be no life without nourishment. What do you imagine for the future of your children? What would you like the world that will host them to be like? Will they grow up with confidence, hope and pragmatism for a sustainable environment? This is the life cycle that is renewed through the human/nature relationship. Marlene actively promotes and contributes to public health by producing fruit, which is essential for a healthy diet."

A great passion
"The second illustration features the protagonist, now a young girl, accompanied by her family. It portrays the value of the apple as a healthy food, a snack during study, as well as part of school education. Her father is by her side, helping her with her studies and feeding her: as a farmer, he is a professional and expert in the trade."

Eva
"In order to communicate healthy concepts, I ended up creating an apple girl/woman. She is a clear personification of the apple, without resorting to an anecdotal approach. She has apples on her mind (she constantly thinks of them), joyfully enjoys an apple (the ultimate healthy action), closes her eyes to hear the sound when we bite into an apple, and takes pleasure in thinking that it is a sweet treat. Apples represent health, nature, balance, elegance and delicacy."

Mother Nature
"This artwork is the land, represented by fertility, the peasant families, which can also be seen throughout the history of the illustrations, are always there. Marlene is vitality, she is heart, she is health. There are some technological elements that control temperature, irrigation, communications, we can't forget that they can help implement improvements, since innovation is vital for this."

We satisfy the hunger for sustainability:
One in every two apples in Italy and almost one apple in ten in Europe is grown in South Tyrol - Südtirol. In future, apples will be more indispensable than ever in providing food and nourishment. So we promote
knowledge and awareness
of the value of our regionally produced food, from crèches to schools right through to universities.
Health? Thanks to fruit!
South Tyrol fruit growing
makes an active contribution to the population’s health
. Because we produce fruit – one of the finest, most valuable foods of all – with the greatest care, safety and quality.
We believe in the strength of agriculture:
Central to South Tyrol fruit growing are the success, health and happiness of everyone involved in agriculture and the added value chain.
The farming families
and their small, very efficient farms
are and will remain the heart of fruit growing
.
OUR PARTNER? NATURE!
How can we reconcile South Tyrol fruit growing and ambitious environmental goals? Here is everything you need to know!
Balance
"Commitment, perseverance, respect, concentration and sensitivity. These are the factors on which any possible balance is based. These are the same factors that will enable us to live in harmony with our planet, creating an environment that is suitable for human health, as well as for nature. A collaboration that is conscious of the necessary delicacy is the first step towards a sustainable future. The three illustrations are designed to be read in the order of their title: Energy - Genesis - Balance, or ‘Energy Generates Balance’, to represent – in a kind of triptych – the entire theme of Sustainability and the relationship between man and nature. The common thread between the three works is also represented by a bee, an element that characterised my illustration for the ‘spring’ season as a symbol of eternal rebirth and the renewal of nature."

Naturally free
"The technological innovation and renewable energy used in the South Tyrolean model is represented. Wind farms and solar panels become an integral part of the land. The young girl is now a woman, getting around by bike and enjoying an area that lives in perfect harmony with nature."

Base
"Describing the traceability of a Marlene apple means analysing and considering every little detail, every inch of land around the apple tree, all the vital complexity which, in an almost perfect way, generates a natural ecosystem of respect and patience, of collaborative creation, of willingness and love for nature right down to its smallest expression. It is the portrait, the drawing of a second in an inch of earth, the smallest detail of what happens as the apple tree – patiently and in good company – prepares its perfect fruit."

A look at the future positive impact on the climate:
Thanks to climate-friendly measures
, by 2030 South Tyrol fruit growing should absorb more CO2 than is produced throughout the value chain. This is thanks to photosynthesis as the trees grow and the build-up of humus in our soils.
The future is rosy for our trees:
By controlling diseases and pests we
keep our trees healthy
, for example by encouraging natural antagonists, for which we create suitable habitats. Or by means of technical innovations such as targeted treatments.
Understanding nature comes naturally to us:
We have inherited the land from our parents and we want to hand it down to coming generations alive and well.
Healthy soils, clean water, pure air and a high level of biodiversity are the aspiration and the reality of South Tyrol fruit growing.
By 2030, we intend to gradually further improve the soil’s quality and health and water use and management, to achieve greater efficiency.
Together, we are more sustainable
for longer!
That is why VOG, the Consortium of South Tyrolean Fruit Growers’ Co-operatives, belongs to the
sustainapple
project.
